The essential first step in planning a child's care and treatment is to assess their current state and needs.

In WA there is now an agreed tool that is uniformly applied to assessing children brought into care or their progress while in care.

The Alliance believes this is a critical issue, that making reliable assessments of children when they are brought into care and then regularly during care is an absolutely essential building block of an effective system.

Alliance Policy

The standard assessment tool needs to be validated and implemented, including:

  • Verification independent of who administers it.
  • Flexibility to reflect changing status and children who have differing status across the measurement categories.
  • Protocols for consistent, universal use of the tool on entering the system and at regular intervals while the child remains in care.
